Advice: How do you know when you’re in love?

Times Square Kiss

Straying a bit from the style side and wanting to expand beyond the pretty girls and get everyone’s opinion on the matter, I wanted to simply ask a question with what can be a wildly complicated answer:

How do you know when you’re in love?

Let the answers fly…

Too wide, too skinny, and just right. Bonobos polos are like my ties.

One of the aspects I like most about a company is attention to the masses. I mean, when someone on the other end seems to be listening. While I have an unhealthy fondness for the likes of J. Crew (as evidenced in my  illustrious history on this site), I wish they had more of a “face” to which I could connect, like the gents at Bonobos make so easy. It goes further than customer service and delves into complete interactivity. But so I don’t come off sounding like a billboard, I was a fan of the inbox-blowup today featuring their new polos, not too wide, not too slim.

Like a glove not on OJ's hand. Too soon?

It’s how I like my ties, especially when wearing them with my polos. Haters be damned. It’s a good look if you can wear it. And me? I can. As if you needed a reminder…

Razorburn and all...

I need a new aftershave or new razor or both.

Warm Enough vs. Man Enough vs. When & Where – The Tank Top

The model's looking slightly to the left.

The weather around Denver is quickly becoming pleasant. Sure, spats of the cold clouds cover the region as is customary with the patterns here. But as the warmth becomes more consistent, I realize that, hell, it’s nearly time to ditch the sleeves altogether, save for a fancy nights out and chillier days. That said, how much of the sleeve am I willing to shed? A polo or t is sufficient, sure, but what of the tank top? Is this ever really a viable clothing option? Yes and no…. You gotta know when.

Park? Fine. Bar? No.

Out and About: Biker Jim’s Dogs – Denver, CO

Been a bit since I’ve had the chance to give some new eats a go, but on my long walk last weekend, acting like an art nerd with a fish-eye lens, I happened upon what has quickly become a cult favorite among the Mile High foodies, Biker Jim’s cart. Deciding I needed a bottle of Stranahan’s ended up being the most fortuitous decision of the day.

Biker Jim's Hot Dogs

Reindeer Games.

In the parking lot of Argonaut stood the hot dog stand manned by, not Biker Jim himself, but from what I caught (and can remember) his name was Mosh. At any rate, I caught the tail end of the day’s business and was able to wrangle a buffalo brat before they closed up cart. I could have gone more adventurous with a reindeer, elk, veal or wild boar, but I refrained, for now. Honestly, the buffalo was maybe one of the best encased meats I’ve shoved down the gullet, and I’ve waited for two hours outside of Hot Doug’s in March Chicago wind. It’s comparing apples and oranges, sure, but something about the vagrants trolling Colfax, the dust from the liquor store parking lot, the thick smell of exhaust from passing trucks, and the fresh bottle of whiskey in my hand made this particular eat all the better. If you’re wanting to some of Denver’s best cart food, Biker Jim himself is usually down on the 16th Street Mall, but when you’re lucky enough to catch the Argonaut station, do it. Here’s a little more info on Biker Jim. Hell, if it’s good enough for Anthony Bourdain, it’s good enough for you.

Tuesdays with the Pretty Girls: The Snug Leather Jacket. Is the boy a timebomb?

“Can regular guys pull off the snug fitting leather jacket or is it only for like Jake in the newest issue of GQ? – Kin Ta

———

I think the snug leather jacket can, and should, be tried by regular guys. Jake wears it well with his shirt/tie/denim as a nice alternative to a blazer. As long as it’s snug (not tight) and paired with slim/straight pants you’re safe. This model (pictured above) looks fantastic in his slim leather jacket and although he might not qualify for a ‘regular guy’ his leather and chino look just works.

It’s all about dressing for your body shape. You don’t want to end up looking like the Michelin man. So if you’re skinny and skin-tight is your thing, then go for it. If you’ve got more meat on you than the above mentioned then refrain and maybe try something not so snug, just to avoid the incredible hulk moment. But I must say, a fit man in a white button down, skinny black tie and a fitted black leather jacket…. Yum is the only word to describe it.
“Fat guy in a little coat!” Pardon the Tommy Boy quote but its not just Jake that can pull off that look. If you’re slender, don’t have shoulders and biceps that scream steroids, and you don’t have a body like Jack Black or Chris Farley, then sure you can pull it off.
Heck yes, ‘regular’ guys can pull off that look.  A recurring theme in all of our responses has been that confidence is key. If you have the confidence, go for it.
Dudes should not be wearing leather jackets. Unless… your Danny Zuko, from “Grease.”
When it comes to leather, “snug” or “fitted” tends to be a fail for me. This goes for men and women. I like a man who looks at ease in his clothes, like he can go through an entire day wearing them and still look effortlessly good when his 5 o’clock shadow appears. A snug leather jacket often looks uncomfortable and even the dashing Jake Gyllenhaal looked restrained by his in the GQ shoot. I say go for a leather jacket by all means, but make it one you can move in and live your life in, like a worn in bomber.

Diggit. I think it’s time to buy a leather jacket, myself.

Got a question? Ask away.
