Power from the past.

Magnesium500 seconds in the past to be precise (8 minutes may be close enough for government work, but it’s not for me). The Solio Magnesium Edition (Solio ME, how cute) is the newer “(Solar)Power To The People” edition of the Obama-approved Solio Classic solar charger. It charges phones, ipods, cameras, gps, psps, and anything else you can get an iGo tip for.

So, does it improve upon the Solio Classic (which should be inherently difficult as it is “classic”)? I’m glad you asked because it does. A lot. I own a Solio Classic and I love the shit out of it.  I got a chance to play with a Solio Magnesium Edition and the Classic has been relegated to “closest guy friend birthday gift” status.

Solio Classic:
Tech Specs: Just 1 hour of sunshine = 20 minutes talk time or 50 minutes of MP3 music.*

  • Weight: 5.6 oz. (156g)
  • Temperature Range: -4F to 131F (-20C to 55C)

Real-World: 1hr of UV = 10min phone time, 30 min ipod

Solio ME:
Tech Specs: One hour of sun will give you enough juice to play your iPod™ for about an hour or provide up to 25 mins of additional talk time on most cell phones.*

  • Nominal DC Output: 3V 3A
  • Maximum Wattage: 9 Watts
  • Battery: Rechargeable Lithium Ion 3.7V 1.8A cell
  • DC Input: 5-6V 0.4Ah
  • Dimensions (LxHxW): 4.72 x 1.34 x 2.56 in (120 x 34 x 63.5 mm)
  • Weight: 6.38 oz. (179g)
  • Temperature Range: -4F to 131F (-20C to 55C)

Real-World: 1hr of UV = 20min phone time, 45min ipod

The Magnesium Edition is a little bit heavier, but it is also ruggedized.  It takes iGo tips and looks better than the classic. Get one before Obama does.
